On the subject of student howlers, I've never forgotten the one my Latin Prelim lecturer related (with an appropriately sardonic expression) when we were going through one of the early chapters of Wheelock:
"'Felices ambo' means 'They are both happy'. It does NOT mean 'I shall love cats'!"
I've had "The dog is in the toilet" for "canis latrat" many times.
On a similar note, my cousin (who did eight weeks of Latin in our Year 7, which is roughly first year of Junior High in the States) remembers absolutely nothing from it apart from the one sentence "canis in via dormit". He always wondered why the dog was weeing on the doormat...
