How do you get your mind to let go of not knowing what a word means and going for the big picture?
This is one of the reasons I like my Latin children's literature collection. Reading Harrius Potter (OK...I admit I didn't finish...) I had all these moments when I had no idea what a word meant (because when would I ever have encountered it?!?), but if I left it aside for a sentence or so, I'd figure it out because I had so much context (...oh, this is about Hedwig, so that means owl!). Of course you can & should do this with unfamiliar stories too, but it's easier when the story's familiar.
(Unfortunately, the grammar of many children's books, even the Seuss ones, is surprisingly complex.)
