Mmmm... I've just been catching up with your entries on Martial and realising that I never took a course in Martial either. What a shame! I've got to put him on my must-read list... but at the moment I have my hands full with all this mediaeval stuff I'm reading, and I have to say I'm enjoying it enormously. There's so much fascinating Latin out there that the Classics programmes pass over entirely, and students have no idea what they're missing. I'm currently happily immersed in the Vita Sancti Columbae and Leo the Great, with a possible side order of Ambrose coming up one of these weekends, and I can't remember ever enjoying Latin so much. :)
(Also, I'm getting better at reading the stuff from left to right, because with the exception of the St. Columba thing, I'm not having to produce translations of what I'm reading and so can afford the luxury of engaging with the Latin AS Latin. And it feels great!)
