Just a quick entry to say that I'm getting fired up for the remainder of the spring semester because, among other things, we will have elections in Stage 11. There is the Latin week we do, culminating with an all Latin day (more on that later).

Do my students have severe apathy right now? Yes, but I won't let it stop me. They still want to come to my class; I'm still one of their favorite teachers. And I will bank on the fact that I can still get them to do basics, I can still get them to read a story, I can still get them to perform decently on tests. Now, if I had inspired students, my gosh, I could go GREAT GUNS. But I will, for now, settle for what I've got.

Next year I will be some place new, some place different with students with a different set of issues and needs. And then we shall see what greater ground can be covered.

Today I've been looking at a grammar first textbook. I realized that there is nothing extraordinary, nothing new, nothing cutting edge, nothing forward thinking about this book and thus how absolutely DULL it is. And it made me realize something: even for all that has gone wrong this year because of how discipline is managed at my school and my school closing, etc, and even for all the modifications and compromises I've had to do because of the students who are sitting in front of me (as opposed to those that we would ideally like sitting infront of me), I AM STILL MAKING LATIN FAR MORE ACCESSIBLE AND MEANINGFUL with the way I'm teaching than a stale, grammar first book of unconnected stories. Oh, yes, there is far more that I could do. Far more. And that's good. There should always be more to do, more to learn, more challenges to meet.

I have, for a couple of months now, been so overwhelmed by the problems at my school and my uncertain future that I lost sight of WHAT IS GOING RIGHT.

Soon, more on card playing. Watch this space!
